How to customise cold brew pouches

For many coffee consumers, convenience is king – even more so since the Covid 19 pandemic. As a result, there’s considerable value in products that are affordable, easy to use, and lightweight, particularly when it comes to cold brew coffee.

Why invest in flexible cold brew pouches? 

For years, flexible packaging has been used to package both whole-bean and ground coffee. In addition to being affordable, convenient, lightweight, and hygienic, flexible pouches offer coffee roasters a versatile surface on which to print their designs and attract customers.

“Cold brew pouches contribute to extending the shelf life through several key mechanisms, explains Krzysztof, who is also the co-founder of the Hard Beans Coffee Technology HUB. “The pouches are designed with materials that create a protective barrier against oxygen, light, and moisture.”

“This sealed packaging ensures that external elements do not degrade the quality of the cold brew over time, maintaining its freshness. Oxygen is a significant factor that can lead to the oxidation of coffee, resulting in changes in flavour and aroma,” he adds. “Cold brew pouches minimise the exposure of coffee to oxygen by sealing it in a pouch, creating a low-oxygen environment.”

Krzysztof adds that it is crucial to note that while cold brew coffee pouches extend the shelf life, they are not immune to a finite shelf life. “The actual duration can vary based on factors such as storage conditions. In most cases, cold brew coffee, if not pasteurised, needs to be stored in a fridge. The shelf life duration will also vary depending on the presence of additives or preservatives.”

What to consider when customising cold brew pouches

He also recommends that business owners ask themselves whether the packaging appears user-friendly. “Is it easy to open, resealable, portable, and suitable for pouring or consuming directly?” Brands must also keep in mind important factors to suit consumer expectations is vital too. 

“Ask yourselves what the environmental impact of the packaging will be. I look for information on recyclability, biodegradability, and the overall ecological footprint, from production to disposal,” Fabrice adds. 

Several coffee brands tend to prefer PET bottles for cold brew as they help to improve product shelf life. Additionally, they can be more cost-effective and often attract customers with their ‘grab and go’ convenience. That said, it has become clear that plastic packaging has become a less viable, and desirable option.
