Bottles and a glass of cold brew coffee

How much caffeine is cold brew coffee bottles?

Wellness has become a bigger priority for consumers in recent years. According to a recent report from McKinsey, 82% of US consumers now consider wellness a “top” or “important” priority in their everyday lives, alongside 73% and 86% of people surveyed in the UK and China, respectively.

As part of this growing trend, the consumption of cold brew coffee has boomed. Often touted as an alternative to sugary drinks and sodas, cold brew has become a popular beverage option for health-conscious consumers.

At the same time, more people are mindful of their caffeine intake – and for good reason. Regularly high levels of consumption can result in a number of adverse side effects, including rapid heart rate, shaky hands, and anxiety.

Cold brew is, of course, prepared differently from hot coffee, steeped in water at lower temperatures for longer periods of time. Inevitably, this impacts its caffeine levels – and many consumers may not be aware of the differences. Moreover, the caffeine content in different cold brew brands can vary significantly, depending on factors such as concentration level, extraction time, and coffee variety.

How much caffeine is typically in cold brew coffee bottles?

Cold brew’s unique brewing method involves steeping ground coffee in cold water, usually between 12 to 24 hours, to slowly extract flavour and caffeine. This method differs from traditional hot brewing, which uses high temperatures to release oils and volatile compounds quickly. By brewing at a low temperature for an extended period, cold brew produces a flavour profile that is typically smoother, sweeter, and less acidic.

The cold brew process generally results in a more concentrated coffee, especially when bottled. Some cold brew coffee bottles contain a ready-to-drink mixture, while others are sold as concentrates that should be diluted with water or milk before drinking. This distinction can significantly impact the caffeine content and flavour intensity.

According to a study analysing the caffeine content of different branded cold brews, a bottle can contain between 100 and 300 mg of caffeine, depending on factors like bottle size and concentration level. This amount is typically higher than in standard hot-brewed coffee, which contains around 95 mg per cup.

For those more accustomed to hot coffee, the caffeine levels in cold brew coffee bottles can have a stronger effect, meaning it’s worth checking the label to understand how much caffeine is in each serving. While bottles with a higher caffeine content are ideal for a quick energy boost, those sensitive to caffeine might want to opt for a lower concentration.

Which factors affect caffeine content in cold brew?

Industry experts explain how various factors influence the caffeine content in cold brew coffee bottles. The amount of caffeine, a natural pesticide produced by the coffee plant, varies across different coffee species and varieties.

In an article from Perfect Daily Grind, Raymond Buerger, founder and CEO of Brew Bomb, said, “Robusta contains almost twice as much caffeine as arabica,” making the choice of beans crucial when determining caffeine levels in cold brew.

Additionally, in the same Perfect Daily Grind article, Matt Swenson, Director of Coffee at Nestlé Partners, clarifies that roasting does not significantly impact caffeine content.

“The roasting process does not break down the caffeine, which makes it safe to assume that the roast profile has a negligible effect on the amount in the final cup,” he said.

Instead, caffeine levels in cold brew are primarily influenced by the ratio of water to coffee used in the brewing process, measured as the beverage’s total dissolved solids (TDS).

Comparing caffeine levels in cold brew to other methods

When understanding the differences in caffeine content in cold brew coffee bottles to other brewing methods, it’s important to consider concentration and brew strength rather than the methods themselves.

As Matt Swenson explained in the Perfect Daily Grind article, “Cold brew is often said to contain more caffeine than other brewing methods, but this is not always the case. It’s not the method that ultimately makes this difference in caffeine, but the strength with which the beverage is served.”

Since cold brew can contain 10 to 30% more total dissolved solids than filter coffee, it has the potential for a higher caffeine content. However, as Matt Swenson notes, cold brew is typically diluted before serving, which significantly lowers the caffeine concentration in the final drink.

He also mentions that there’s a “declining point of return” for caffeine extraction in cold brew coffee. Once it reaches a certain saturation point, extending the brew time will not result in more caffeine.

As Raymond Buerger notes in the article: “For hot brew methods, 90% of available caffeine extracts are released in under six minutes. For cold water extraction, the caffeine content is rapidly extracted within the first 180 minutes and then plateaus.”

This means that while cold brew may start with a high rate of extraction, the actual caffeine level in the final beverage depends on the level of dilution and the strength intended by the manufacturer. Consequently, cold brew coffee bottles can have a caffeine content that is often comparable to other brewing methods, making it possible to find options that match different caffeine preferences, from strong to mild.
