Bruvi machine with custom printed cold coffee packaging for capsules

Why your brand needs custom printed cold coffee packaging

Today, retail spaces, city high streets, and supermarket shelves are more competitive than ever before. Coffee companies need to differentiate themselves and their products, and custom printed cold coffee packaging is a proven way to do so.

Aesthetics, branding, and packaging may not be the first thoughts for coffee businesses – roasting, blending, pouring, and brewing are more synonymous. Nevertheless, just like coffee quality and price point, building a beautiful brand is essential to success.

We spoke to Mel Elias, founder of Bruvi, to learn more about the rapidly growing cold coffee market and the importance of brand aesthetics and packaging customisation options to modern industry players.

How does Mel see the cold coffee space developing?

Cold coffee is nothing new. Especially in the United States and Asian markets, consumers have been seeking out cold or iced caffeine fixes for decades to match their climates or traditional beverage cultures better.

In 1969, Japan’s Ueshima Coffee Company (UCC) introduced the first canned coffee featuring custom-printed cold coffee packaging. This made convenient cold coffee available nationwide. From that original iced black coffee can, the RTD and cold coffee segments have come a long way.

“I see growing interest in cold brew and other cold coffee beverages for both at-home and away-from-home consumption,” says Mel.

“Our goal at Bruvi is to provide as much beverage versatility as possible, so including cold brew functionality was part of our plan from the beginning, and we continue to innovate with cold coffee options to meet demand.

“Currently, every B-Pod – the capsules compatible with Bruvi equipment – can be made as a cold brew beverage, and one of our very first partners was Joyride Original Cold Brew. We also offer low-acid brewing for all our coffee options, which is one of the main reasons some people prefer cold brew.

“Our innovation roadmap includes more cold brew and more cold coffees via new brewing options as well as new lines of B-Pods.”

Bruvi is fulfilling widespread consumer demand for convenient ways to brew cold coffee beverages at home. Just like custom printed cold coffee packaging formats like cans or bottles help shoppers get their coffee fix on the go, Bruvi helps its customers enjoy that same convenience without the need to leave the house.

“I expect cold brew to be an established product segment in the coffee landscape, growing in market share with each passing year,” Mel adds.

“Consumers will become more knowledgeable about low-acid content, and perhaps cold brew vendors will start to differentiate their products not by process but by perceived acidity levels. Cold brew has benefits beyond taste as well; the future will bring some creative marketing and differentiation to the mix.”

While Bruvi focuses on development in the at-home cold coffee segment, its counterparts on the RTD and out-of-home side of the industry are innovating at a similar rate, lifting the whole cold coffee segment.

How important are design and aesthetics to modern coffee businesses?

As demand for cold coffee increases, the market becomes more competitive, with more companies trying to grab a slice of the pie. For roasters, coffee shops, or cold brew vendors, choosing the right custom printed cold coffee packaging will help differentiate their brands.

“People want to buy brands that share their values, their aesthetics, even their personality,” says Mel.

“In a crowded category like coffee, consumers have so many options, but branding and design can help you cut through and attract customers. Great packaging not only conveys what the brand is about but also helps shape consumer expectations about the product.”

Bruvi has applied this philosophy to create a premium, elegant, industrially designed brewer that embodies its values and quality standards to great effect. For those selling retail cold coffee, custom printed cold coffee packaging can have the same effect.

Cold brew can be packaged in myriad ways – bag-in-box formats, flexible cold brew pouches, custom cans, and BPA-free bottles, to name a few. All can be sourced from partners that should offer blue-sky customisation capabilities.

When designing your own custom printed cold coffee packaging, consider the materials used, the brand aesthetic displayed, and the storytelling and sustainability credentials shared.

Bag-in-box packaging is highly recyclable and made from compostable materials. Thanks to its large, square dimensions, it offers businesses a prime opportunity to impact passing shoppers in busy aisles. Flexible cold brew pouches are made from similarly sustainable materials and boast the same type of brandable real estate. Make sure your packaging partner helps you take full advantage.

Aluminium cans are the most common form of custom printed cold coffee packaging. New labelling techniques and sizings have made cans even more appealing to shoppers, and their single-serve capabilities mesh nicely with active lifestyles.

Custom cans offer coffee brands a 360-degree design canvas, better capturing the audience’s imagination and conveying environmentally friendly business practices. BPA-free plastic bottles offer similar benefits for the single-serve category.

When choosing your custom printed cold coffee packaging, consider the size of the product you want to sell, the type of consumer you are targeting, and the type of retail partners you’re seeking. These factors will dictate how you scale your portfolio.

At Cold Brew Pak, we offer a range of recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable custom-printed cold coffee packaging, including bag-in-box, cold brew pouches, custom cans, and BPA-free bottles.

Nespresso Master Origins canned coffee

Canned coffee: fast becoming mainstream

For younger shoppers, canned coffee is not a novelty. Instead, choosing RTD coffee for a morning caffeine fix or an afternoon pick-me-up is fast becoming a mainstream choice.  In late 2024, Nespresso launched its first-ever canned coffee beverage, touting Colombian single-origin beans wrapped in a sleek purple sleeve. The world’s most famous coffee brand is stepping into the RTD space.
