Why you should offer convenient coffee cans

Convenience has long been a key purchasing factor for coffee-drinking shoppers, and convenient coffee cans are an excellent way for businesses to satisfy thirsty customers beyond the coffee shop setting.

90% of customers report that they are likely to choose a retailer or brand based on convenience alone, and almost every single person (97%) says they have backed out of a purchase because it was inconvenient.

Online shopping and increased urbanisation have really brought convenience to the fore, and retailers and brands need to ensure they offer ready-to-go versions of their products to avoid missing out on potential revenue.

Convenient coffee cans are popping up everywhere, so we looked to Chamberlain Coffee, a California-based specialty coffee company, to illustrate why you should consider carrying them too.

How does Chamberlain Coffee approach convenient coffee cans

Chamberlain Coffee is a progressive specialty coffee company that calls Beverley Hills, California, home. Across its online and in-store sales channels, Chamberlain offers a wide variety of innovative, convenient, and alternative coffee products.

Alongside an RTD convenient coffee can line-up, Chamberlain offers a range of different flavours and origins, such as cold brew coffee bags that can be steeped in cold water for an easy at-home cold brew.

In August 2023, Chamberlain announced the release of new plant-based convenient coffee cans in an effort to “bring fans the same high-quality product they’ve come to expect in a new convenient format.”

“Chamberlain Coffee’s flavour line-up includes a Mocha Latte, a Cinnamon Bun Latte, a Vanilla Latte, and a traditional Cold Brew Latte. Each of the four flavours is naturally sweetened with date syrup, containing only 1g of sugar, and dairy-free, made with almond milk and coconut cream.

“House in colourful and decorative cans that pull inspiration from the brand’s signature characters to allow fans to find a flavour and a can to match their mood.”

Chamberlain’s motivation behind its launch of an RTD line-up is evidence of a clear understanding of more significant market trends at play.

As younger consumers live increasingly busy, on-the-go lifestyles, they seek refreshments that are easily transportable but do not sacrifice quality or experience.

Chamberlain’s RTD lineup expressly attempts to replicate that in-store experience regardless of the setting. The coffee market is too competitive to allow brands to get away with RTD products that don’t meet their coffee shop standards.

As a brand considering a line of convenient coffee cans, this is an important lesson to take note of. Convenience is essential, but without quality, you will be outcompeted – it’s important to make sure your convenient coffee cans are as close to the real thing as possible.

“I don’t believe convenience should sacrifice quality,” said Emma Chamberlain, co-founder and creative director.

“I developed these canned lattes for people who want to enjoy a delicious, high-quality latte, even on the busiest of days. This launch, inspired by my daily cold brew recipe, is especially exciting for me because it’s a product I have been dreaming of making since we started the brand.”

What kind of upsides do convenient coffee cans offer coffee companies?

Convenient coffee cans represent an FMCG entry for coffee companies, allowing them to develop new sales channels and revenue opportunities, listing in supermarkets, convenience stores, transport hubs, and e-commerce platforms.

The data backs up the growing emphasis on sales channels beyond the coffee shop. Since 2020, micro market revenue – coffee sales from self-service retail spaces in workplaces or commercial environments – has grown 41%.

According to the Nama Foundation, 82% of convenience stores now sell coffee, and many specialty coffee roasters have embraced the movement towards ready-to-go coffee by developing capsules, pods, RTD cold brew, and more.

Chamberlain Coffee launched its new RTD line-up in an exclusive collaboration with Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, with 11,500 outlets worldwide. The goal was to ensure that “fans will be able to shop the RTD lattes on shelves nationwide.”

“Making Chamberlain Coffee accessible to customers whenever and wherever they are is always the goal, and this new product is helping us do just that,” said CEO Christopher Gallant.

“We’re thrilled to have Walmart as our exclusive retail partner for launch, and look forward to this new, delicious product being available to customers conveniently nationwide.”

Convenient coffee cans are highly customisable, allowing coffee brands to properly represent their stories, aesthetics, and imagery in a sleek and modern way. Laser engraving, a slick, sustainable way to label cans, reinforces the contemporary look and feel, replacing bulky or ill-fitting plastic or paper labelling.

As Chamberlain points out, excellent design helps customers recognise brands on busy supermarket or convenience store shelves and fridge doors. This is essential for converting customers in adjacent sales channels and attracting new ones.

Aluminium is also infinitely recyclable and by far the material best suited to closed-loop recycling systems. This resonates well with sustainably minded customers and eco-conscious brand values.

The upsides of offering convenient coffee cans are multifaceted. Coffee brands gain access to new sales channels, enhance their sustainability credentials, attract new customers, and demonstrate their commitment to innovation and variation to their established consumer bases.

At Cold Brew Pak, we offer immensely customisable cold coffee packaging for the specialty coffee sector. Our aluminium cans provide a 360-degree, fully customisable canvas for you to tell your brand story, add design and aesthetic variation, and better grab customer attention.
